Tip # 1 Create your story

Over the years I’ve seen small business owners struggle with their story or message to their consumers even though they have an awesome product or service. You must understand that people buy emotionally and explain it intellectually. Your story should be short and concise with high-energy impact.

What to consider within a high energy story:

Should be 3-5 minutes in length.
Two sentences should explain what you do.
One sentence should tell others how you do it.
The last sentence must reveal “why” you do it.

When I say it must be 3-5 minutes then talk about the sentences it is because you should be able to write it and share it personally. The two best ways of communicating to others are found above.

Here is your impact story test:
Does it connect?
Does it sound like a sales pitch? If so try again!
If you offered no product would your story sound true and believable?
What is your ultimate value?
Why would the listener want to know more?

If you can answer these questions in a simple word or two then your prospect can do the same.

Tip #2 Stay Strong and Stay Long

Before you go and fill your credit card on a marketing campaign you might want to answer the following question: Can I stay for a solid amount of time in the marketing arena? If you don’t have the staying power of 12-18 months then my advice is to save your money. Longevity is the key. Consistency is the winner.

Here is how you test your staying power:
Can I afford a nice quality of paper and photos?
Does my budget have a long-term approach or am I hoping I get a sale quick to pay for the next month’s marketing plan?
Do I have a marketing plan or shooting from the hip?
Will I be around long enough for people to hear and remember my story?

Recently a small business owner in Los Angeles shared with me about his advertising on local TV during the Summer Olympics. He told me that he ran his advertising campaign for 2 months with little results and then stopped because he ran out of money. Needless to say he was disappointed.

Did the marketing firm tell him that 2 months is not enough or did they take his credit card and look for the next consumer to throw away his or her money? Ask yourself the questions and you will know the answers.

Tip #3 Target your market. The “No” Shotgun Approach

Many people think that the more people that hear about them the money they will make. This is simply not true! Is this a sales technique or a myth? You can decide. After all it is your money.

The right kind of people that hear about your story the more money you make. Target your next people. Finding your target audience will save you money and attract people to you and your business.

Questions to ask about your target audience:
Where do the people go that would be interested in my product or services?
What do people read that would inquire of such?
Can I find groups of people that would be interested?
Are there certain magazines, clubs, or public areas that my target seem to frequent?

By answering these simple questions and you may have more questions of your own then you begin to find the target and your plan can attack such areas. No shotgun approach will work in most cases.

Tip #4 Share your business..

If you love what you do then you will always be successful. Why? We share what we are excited about. You will find hundreds of opportunities each month as you go through daily life. Airplanes, super markets, health spas, public parks, and the list can go on for pages. The powerful energy you exude is contagious. The money follows that energy not the other way around. Most people think if they have a product that makes them money then they could get excited about it. WRONG! It is simply the other way around.

Questions to ask before you begin:
Is your product in your heart before it hits the shelf?
Is sharing your business a joy, fun and exhilarating?
Do you wake up in the morning feeling that the world needs what you have?

If you answered no to the questions above then rethink your business or your mindset.

Tip #5 Start small and grow BIG

Don’t get caught in thinking bigger is better. If it sounds to good to be true it is! Begin your marketing with what you can afford. This will decrease the stress in your life and help you enjoy what you do on a day-to-day basis. If it sounds like you can get rich overnight then I suggest that you keep your credit card in your pocket. If we could get rich that quick then we would all be rich and our money would be worthless.

Questions to ask about how to grow BIG over time:
Are you comfortable with the amount you are spending on marketing?
Is your first small step coming from a plan or are you buying on the emotion that something might happen?
What do you expect to receive from your first small step?
When can I begin? Now or Never?

Planning is the key and one of my best tips. You can be successful but it must come from a plan not from an emotion.

Making great decisions come from a place of knowing what you want in your business and your life. Don’t get caught buying when you are in desperate need of answers or money. Plan your marketing with a purpose. No silver bullets are flying your way. It is all in the plan and the purpose. Decide if marketing is really for you.
